Analysis of title sequence

The opening shot of the documentary 'What happened Miss Simone?' is a medium long shot and stays on screen for 5 seconds before fading out. In doing this it allows the audiences to come to a judgement on Nina Simone. The colourful background suggest an elegant and interesting woman, however, her distant stare connotes pain and a difficult life. This is emphasised by the image being in a smaller white box and the rest of the screen being black. It suggests that she is isolated as a person. Moreover, her being contained in a white box could be an allusion to the racism she has experienced throughout her life.
The title sequence introduces important members in the making of the film. The title sequence is a collection of videos and photos of Nina Simone that fade into each other. In doing this the title sequence demonstrates her depth of character as, for instance, between 53 seconds and 1 minute we see a smiling photo of Nina Simone fade into a blue sad one; which itself connotes sadness. This is emphasised by the use of mostly medium close up and close ups which intensifies the ideas that the title sequence is attempting to convey to the audience.

The title sequence demonstrates her to be an energetic and passionate performer, the simultaneous fade in of three different images and increasing speed of the edit aid the emphasis of this.

The end of the title sequence, an ominous question that fades into an energetic performance intrigues the audience.
